FAQ
1. Is there a delay/early dismissal due to weather?
Answer: Please watch the local TV station or go on the website for wgal (www.wgal.com) for a listing of delays/closings. We are SOUTH WESTERN SCHOOL DISTRICT.
2. How do I get homework when my child is absent?
Answer: If your child is absent only one day you can call the homework hotline for the homework assignments for that day. For absences of 2 or more days a request should be made with the guidance office to collect make up work. Requests need to be in by 10:00 am in order for teachers to have adequate time to get work together. Work can then be picked up in the guidance office between 3:30-4:00 that same day. (Page 7, Student Handbook)
3. What do we do if we are going on vacation and will miss school?
Answer: An educational travel form is available from the guidance office. These forms must be filled out in advance of the scheduled trip. An educational project, as well as all missed work, must be completed in order for the days to be excused. You are only allowed 5 excused days of educational travel per school year. (Page 8, Student Handbook)
4. We are moving - what do we do?
Answer: If you are moving within the district, you must notify the guidance office and provide a new proof of residence for your file. If you are moving out of the district, you must notify the guidance office and fill out appropriate withdrawal forms. We can then forward the appropriate enrollment information to the receiving school district. (Page 9, Student Handbook)
5. How can I check on my child's progress in the classroom?
Answer: We have an online grading system (Sapphire Parent Portal) which allows you to access your child’s grades any time you like. You can sign up for a Parent Portal account by visiting our district's website (www.swsd.k12.pa.us). Under the community drop down box you will see one titled "Community Portal". Click on this and follow the directions to sign up. You will be e-mailed a PIN #, which you will then use to log in to your individual account. (Page 4, Student Handbook)
6. What is the Homework Hotline/Phonemaster 2000 system?
Answer: The Homework Hotline is a means to strengthen the communication ties between school and the home. This system gives parents and students the ability to confirm homework assignments. Call (717) 632-2548 and select option 8 from the main menu. After the welcome message, enter the desired teacher’s homework box number. Enter another homework box number after the recording is finished. (Page 28, Student Handbook) |
